OnePlace Themes - Choosing a Look that Fits Your Style
Posted by Denis Ahearn on September 16, 2010
How you feel about a software application has as much to do with how the software looks as it does with how the software acts. I've used desktop and web applications in the past that functionally got the job done, but using the user interface of those applications was like nails on a chalkboard for me. Because I didn't care for how the application looked, it tainted my overall user experience and satisfaction of the app.
One of the reasons I am a huge fan of Apple is their attention to detail on the emotional side of using hardware and software. Their products just look and feel cool to me, as well as to many others. I personally think that they just "get it" when it comes to producing consumer technology products. They seem to focus on all aspects of their products, starting with the way they advertise them, the packaging they are shipped in, the initial set up experience, and then ultimately how you use their products. And this is coming from some who happily used Microsoft products exclusively for 15+ years in my professional career.
I bring this up to highlight a feature within OnePlace that allows you to choose a look that feels comfortable inside your brain - themes. Themes have been in OnePlace for some time, and we've recently expanded our selection of themes to a total of 8 different themes, with more on the way. Included in our selection are seasonal themes (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter). My personal favorite is Winter, although my favorite time of the year is Spring.
You can select your theme by clicking on the Settings item in the menu at the top of OnePlace, and choosing the Themes option. The "Choose a Theme" dialog is shown below to give you an idea of what colors each theme is designed to use:
We'd love to hear from users about which theme is their favorite. Also, if your perfect theme isn't available yet, please give us ideas on future themes you'd like to see.
