Setting Up Your Home Page for Effective Work Management

Posted by Denis Ahearn on June 16, 2010

Much like the Burger King slogan "Have it Your Way", which allows you to build a hamburger to your precise liking, OnePlace lets you configure your Home page to fit the exact way you want to manage your work and collaborate with your teammates. Here's a quick run down of the various things you can do to get your Home page set up to work best for you:

Add/Remove Panels
Some people like more details, some people prefer fewer details. Some people manage projects exclusively, and other people perform the work. By adding or removing panels from your Home page, you are able to pull in only the information that you find valuable to have at your fingertips. To add new panels to your Home page, click the "Customize Home Page" link in the upper right of the Home page, and choose the panels you want. To remove panels from your Home page, simply click on the "x" icon in the upper right corner of the panel.

Reposition Panels
If you are like me, you'll want to put the absolute most important information in the upper left of your Home page, and put other less critical information (but still important) towards the lower right of the Home page. Moving panels around is simple using drag and drop. Just click on the header of the panel with your mouse, and while holding down the left mouse button, drag the panel to the spot where you'd like it to be, and then let go of the mouse button.

One Columns or Two
OnePlace allows you to lay out your panels in either a single column or as two columns. If you are on a monitor with limited resolution (perhaps 1024 x 768), probably the one column layout would work best. If you are on a wide-screen monitor with higher resolution, the two column layout might be a better choice to take advantage of the extra horizontal screen real-estate. To choose the number of columns on your Home page, click on the "Customize Home Page" link, and specify the number of columns you would like (one or two).

Teammates Panel - Left Side or Right Side
The Teammates panel on your Home page, which shows you the people you share workplaces with, is a special panel in the sense that it can be positioned on either the left edge of the Home page or the right edge. To move this panel, click the "Customize Home Page" link, and set the "Show Teammates panel on" setting accordingly.

Expand/Collapse Panels
Each panel on your Home page can be pinned in a collapsed or an expanded state. OnePlace will remember which panels you've collapsed, and which ones you want expanded. To collapse a panel that is expanded, simply click the "-" icon in the upper right of the panel. Likewise, click the "+" icon to expand a panel that is collapsed. Note that in the collapsed state, most of the panels will still provide you with a handy summary of the information contained in the panel.

Modify Panel Settings
Most panels on the Home page offer controls for setting up the information shown in the panel. For example, you can specify how many items you want to see at one time (i.e. 5, 10, 15, etc.). Some panels provide controls for filtering the information shown. For example, the "Scheduled Tasks" panel lets you show only tasks that have not been completed on your schedule. These controls, or view settings are hidden by default, but showing them is easy - just click the Settings link in the header of the panel. If the view settings are hidden, they'll become visible (and vice versa). OnePlace will remember when you hide/show a panel's view settings, so feel free to make the view settings visible for panels that you have a tendency to change these view settings frequently.
