OnePlace, Your Resident Historian
Posted by Denis Ahearn on March 24, 2010
If you are familiar with the story of Hansel and Gretel, then you might recall that Hansel laid a trail of breadcrumbs for him and his sister to follow in order that they could find their way back home. Unfortunately, the breadcrumbs were eaten by hungry birds, and the two children ended up getting lost in the woods and eventually bumped into a rather nasty witch. The fact that they had no history of where they'd been, and subsequently no way to back track nearly led to their undoing.
One of the lessons learned from this fable, is that it's a good idea to have a permanent history that you can follow to see where you've been and what you've done. Online organization and collaboration solutions like OnePlace do this for you automatically. Like a dutiful scribe, they sit silently in the background recording your every move. And when you need to go back in time to see what was done and by whom, these solutions provide the time machine to follow the trail of edits exactly as they occurred.
OnePlace has several features that make it easy for you to keep track of your team's evolving information over time:
Team Activity panel on your Home page
From here you get a birds eye view of everything you and your teammates have done in OnePlace over a specific range of time. The default is Today, however you can look back further than that if you like. This view is very handy for keeping up-to-date with the daily activity of your team.
View Changes Dialog
Whenever something is modified in OnePlace, the details about that change (what was changed, when it was changed, and who changed it) are recorded and saved away by OnePlace. This dialog provides the means for viewing this information. OnePlace will show you the old and new values for each field that was changed during that editing session.
History
When you click on something like a project, task or file, one of the things you can see is its history. This shows you what has happened to this information starting with the most recent change all the way through to when it was initially created.
Update Notifications
When you edit something, you can elect to notify others teammates of the change. The notification that OnePlace sends will contain the details about which fields you changed, making it easy for other team members to see exactly what you did.
Once you start using an online organization and collaboration solution that keeps track of history and puts this information at your fingertips, you'll wonder how your team ever survived prior to that point. It's a comforting feeling knowing that this historical information is there when you need it most. So, unlike Hansel and Gretel, don't leave your team stuck in the woods with a hungry old witch lurking about. Sign up for OnePlace today!
