New OnePlace coming soon to a browser near you

Posted by Steve Kickert on September 29, 2009

We are getting close. We have been working on a major upgrade for OnePlace for over two months now, and we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are hoping it is not a train. :-)

Back in July, we met with many of you to get your feedback on how OnePlace was working for your team, and to hear what you would like to change about OnePlace. Thanks again for taking the time to do that. We listened carefully, and have made some big changes and a mountain of little ones to OnePlace as a result. We can hardly wait to let you move into your new OnePlace. We are excited to use it ourselves.

Here is an abbreviated list of the changes that are coming:

  • New Home Page
The home page has been totally redesigned. Now you will be able to configure what is on the home page and where it is by moving the panels around on the home page. No longer does a single look and feel for the home page have to work for everyone. There are many new panels that have been added for your use. At last count there were over 10 panels to choose from, with more on the way.
  • Teammate Pages
Information about a team member is now just a click away, via the new Teammate Pages feature. This page is like the Home page in that it has panels that are configurable, however all the information shown on this page is focused on a specific teammate. Think of this like "Facebook for teams".
  • New Project Navigator
No more confusion when navigating through your project trees! The breadcrumbs are gone and are replaced with a project hierarchy navigator inside of each workplace. This navigator is displayed the entire time you are in a workplace, so it is very easy to see, at a glance, which project you are looking at.
  • Centralized Reporting
Having centralized reports makes it much clearer how to access the reporting functionality within OnePlace. Initially you will be able to create reports at the workplace, project and tasks level. The Tasks report is very similar to the "Task Export" feature, so if if you've tasks from OnePlance, then you will already know how to use this report. More types of reports will be coming in future releases.
  • Rich History
Have you ever received a notification from OnePlace about something has been updated and wonder what was changed? Wonder no more. OnePlace now keeps track of changes to all items (tasks, projects, notes, files, etc.) at the field level. So, update notifications that are sent out will now include what has changed as well as who made those changes. You can now see the history for an item in the "Details" view, as well as history for all items within a workplace on the Workplace Dashboard, and history of all items for your team on the Home page.
  • Workplace and Project Dashboard Update
We are still working on this area of the app, but we have made some changes to include more meaningful statistics on the two dashboards. With the inclusion of some charts, it is now much easier to see the status of a project or workplace.
  • Workplace Configurability
We added the ability for the workplace admin to "turn off" functionality (Projects, Notes, Files...) on a workplace by workplace level.
  • All Tasks
The All Tasks tab from the old Home page was moved to a separate All Tasks mode (same functionality) that you can access via an "All Tasks" button in the toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Discussions Menu
When you click on the Discussions button in the toolbar at the top of the page, a menu now appears which delineates your unread, recently viewed, and joined discussions. This will make it much easier to access your discussions.
  • Themes
We've enhanced OnePlace to support different themes, and part of this work will include an updated look to OnePlace (for those who like the current look, there will be a "classic" theme you can choose to keep that look). We'll ship a a few themes in the upcoming release, with more themes to come in future releases.
  • Team Central Changes
We were told many times over that "the team" needed to become more central to OnePlace. So, we have moved all of the functionality that was in Team Central to more accessible/prominent places in the application:
    • Teammates - Moved to the home page
    • Team Pulse - Moved to the home page in a panel
    • Team Schedule - Moved to the teammate page
    • Team Activity - Moved to the teammate page

So, you can see that there are a number of changes coming that will impact how you use OnePlace. Our current plan is to ship by the middle of October, but with any luck it will be sooner than that. We'll give you ample warning ahead of the upgrade so that you can prepare your team accordingly.
