You've got mail!

Posted by Steve Kickert on August 26, 2008

There is a fine line between checking for new messages too little and too often. If you check for them too little you run the risk of missing out on an important discussion and note. If you were critical to the discussion then you run the risk of interrupting the communication flow of the team.
Check them too often and you will get nothing else done. This is nothing new to you if you already use email.

In OnePlace, we are striving to make it more convenient to see if you have new inbasket notes or new discussion messages. The screenshot below is of the toolbar within OnePlace. Notice the '4' in a maroon box above the Inbasket icon and also the '2' above the Discussion icon. These are called 'badges' in OnePlace. Since the toolbar is always visible within OnePlace, you can see if you have unread messages/notes anytime you are in OnePlace.

The badge above the Inbasket icon contains the number of notes in your inbasket that have not been read. This would include notes that you have sent to yourself, sent by OnePlace or sent to you by others.

The badge above the Discussions icon contains the number of discussions that you are participating in that have unread messages. Note: this is NOT the total number of discussion 'messages' that you have not read. Another Note: You have to join a discussion in order to be considered a participant. You can do this by posting a message to the discussion or explicitly joining the discussion (via the join icon in the Actions panel) while viewing the discussion.

badges

One last thing, OnePlace behaves more like a desktop application than a web application. So, the badges that were outlined above are automatically updated without needing to refresh the page. Matter of fact, you never need to refresh the page in OnePlace. Where appropriate, OnePlace will automatically keep the display current.
Note: The badges in the toolbar are updated once a minute.
